With Let It Rain, Tracy Chapman has found an almost perfect platform for her potent voice. She and coproducer John Parish have opted for a muted approach where guitars and tambourines stir among simple, unadorned rhythms. The singer's once boldly strummed acoustic guitar is here replaced by a more constant tidal flow, with handclaps, gospel-tinged choruses, and an open-barreled bass drum marking time. Chapman even goes trip-hopping on "In the Dark, " a strangely shadowy highpoint featuring her artfully quavering vocal melody. The jumpy interludes on "Hard Wired" and the chamber interlude of "Over in Love" (which is reminiscent of the gorgeous interstitial tunes on Hem's debut) add color.

Atom Heart Mother is a 1970 progressive rock album by British band Pink Floyd. It is named after its title track, which was originally titled "The Amazing Pudding". The song's name was changed after the band came across a newspaper article about a pregnant woman with an atomic pacemaker with the headline "ATOM HEART MOTHER." The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England. It reached number 1 in the UK and number 55 in the U.S. charts and went Gold in the U.S. in March of 1994. A re-mastered CD was released in 1994 in the UK and 1995 in the U.S.

The original album cover shows a very ordinary cow standing in a very ordinary pasture, with no text nor any other clue as to what might be on the record. This is, in fact, due to the "space rock" imagery associated with Pink Floyd at the time of the album's release; the band wanted to explore all sorts of music without being limited to a particular image or style of performance. They thus requested that their new album have "something plain" on the cover, which ended up being the image of the cow.

The longest two tracks are a progression from Pink Floyd's earlier instrumental pieces such as "A Saucerful of Secrets"; the Atom Heart Mother Suite is split into six parts and features a full orchestra while there are three distinct segments of Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast which are joined by dialogue and sound effects of a kitchen cooking breakfast. The reason the songs are split is because in the early 70's, bands only received royalties based on how many tracks were on an album. The original LP ends with the constant sound of a dripping tap in the inner groove. Also included are three five-minute songs: one by each of the band's three resident songwriters. Roger Waters contributes a folk ballad called "If" which he would play frequently at live shows in support of his Radio KAOS album. This is followed by Rick Wright's brass-heavy "Summer '68," a critique of the "rock 'n roll" lifestyle that would soon become characteristic of Pink Floyd. Finally, there is David Gilmour's "Fat Old Sun," which spent two years as a key part of the band's live set.

Trilogy is the third studio album by British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, originally released in 1972. The interior of the original gatefold sleeve features a photomontage showing multiple images of the band in a forest carpeted with autumn leaves.

The band had already released two very carefully performed studio albums, Emerson, Lake and Palmer (1970) and Tarkus (1971), the former being dominated by virtuoso keyboards and drumming; the latter being as bombastic as it was ambitious. Trilogy, their third studio album, presented a recession from the pretentious attitude of their first two albums. The 9 tracks have each been carefully conceived, arranged and performed, as in the style of the symmetrical classical era.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer's new one, Trilogy, is easily the best they have done. Which means that it's serious, snotty-rock playing of a competence most bands can't begin to achieve. Keith Emerson plays Hammond organ, Steinway, something called the Zoukra and two varieties of Moog; Greg Lake handles numerous guitar chores and sings; Carl Palmer is a rock-percussion genius. The major things here are two suites, "The Endless Enigma" -- really in three parts, the second of which is a piano fugue -- and the "Trilogy" of the title, whose third part comes on strong with a latino beat and Bach lines. Emerson, as is his wont, nods to the big boys with a selection from Aaron Copeland's "Rodeo." There is a great power in everything played here, as well as that rarest of rock commodities, taste -- something that E.L. & P. have worked hard to develop.

But for the most part, users won't notice a real difference. One-handed navigationA long overdue addition to the Windows user interface is the ability to navigate without using the touchscreen. The PocketPC version of Windows Mobile 5.0 has adopted "soft keys" similar to those found on Windows Smartphones. These soft keys reside on the bottom of the screen, and provide context-sensitive commands. The soft keys can be activated either by tapping on them, or by pressing the hardware button associated with that key. When a softkey pulls up a menu, the directional pad can be used to select the option you want.PocketPC/Smartphone application compatibilityAnother selling point of WM5 is application compatibility between the Pocket PC and Smartphone versions of the OS. Previously, developers had to produce two seperate installs for their programs if they wanted to work on both PPC and SP. Now, the same version of a program will run on both devices, at least in theory. It's about time. The need to have seperate, incompatible versions of an application negated any real benefit from running similar operating systems on Pocket PCs and Windows Smartphones.

ActiveSync 4.0
ActiveSync 4.0 really doesn't look any different from AS3.8. All the options are the same. The update notes talk about an "Enhanced user interface," but then those same update notes talk about Bluetooth syncing like it's a new feature. The only significant difference that I can find between ActiveSync 3.8 and 4.0 is that AS4 is missing the ability to synchronize your device over a TCP/IP connection. This means that you'll no longer be able to sync over WiFi, ethernet, dialup, cellular, VPN, or any other remote access method. The only accepted means of syncing are now Bluetooth or a cabled connection to the PC. Unfortunately, if you want to sync a WM5 device, you've got no choice but to "upgrade" to AS4, since older versions refuse to sync with the new models.
